What does it mean to be USDA certified?

What does it mean to be USDA certified?

A "USDA certified biobased product" refers to a product that has been independently tested and certified by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as containing a certain percentage of biobased content. Biobased content refers to the portion of a product that comes from renewable biological sources, such as plants, animals, and marine life. The higher the biobased content, the more environmentally friendly and sustainable the product is considered.

To earn the USDA certified biobased product label, manufacturers must undergo a certification process, which includes submitting information about the product's composition and the percentage of biobased content. Independent third-party testing is often conducted to verify these claims.

WHAT THE LABEL TELLS US?

The imagery on this label symbolizes the sun, soil/farm, and aquatic environments. In this instance, the product is composed of 57% biobased materials, while the packaging contains 32% biobased content. The "FP" on the label signifies that this product is eligible for mandatory federal purchasing. The term "Percent Biobased Content" refers to the ratio of new organic carbon to total organic carbon in a product. New organic carbon is derived from renewable sources like plants, marine life, and forestry materials. The total organic carbon encompasses both new organic carbon and old organic carbon, which comes from petroleum.
